I teach dressmaking classes at Fabric Focus in Edinburgh. A course typically runs for 8 – 10 weeks and allows you to learn dressmaking as a beginner or to develop your existing skills with more complex techniques, patterns and fabrics.

Dressmaking – Beginners course
This beginner’s dressmaking class will provide the student with a good knowledge and understanding of garment construction from beginning to end, learning different techniques and mastering the sewing machine and to enjoy the process with encouragement to carry on this very useful skill.
- Confidence in using the sewing machine having learned the process of threading up, filling the bobbin, stitch selecting and speed control.
- Choosing fabric and patterns, understanding the instructions.
- Attention to body measurements will help achieve a perfectly fitted garment.
- Pattern and fabric preparation, layout. Pinning, cutting out.
- Understanding the various techniques in construction ie. seams, darts, zips with the aim to complete a garment.
The tutor will provide the students with examples and demonstrations of dressmaking techniques in a group tuition form; this will be combined with one to one tuition during the class, allowing each student to work at their own pace.
Suggested garments to make in the course:
Skirt with darts, zip and lining, panels.
Sleeveless tunic/ top or drop sleeved shirt
Sleeveless dress panelled or darted.
Fabrics: Cotton, Linen, Crepe, Poly wool mix, wool.
Dressmaking - Developing skills course
This class is aimed at students with some dressmaking knowledge, who would like to continue learning and developing their skills by taking on the challenges of new techniques not tried before.
Students should come with a chosen pattern that will give them new challenges, combined with their previous dressmaking knowledge and a good understanding of using a sewing machine.
The tutor will provide the students with examples and demonstrations of dressmaking techniques in a group, this will be combined with one to one tuition allowing each student to work at their own pace and providing a tailored assistance as required for each person.
GENERAL AIM OF THE COURSE: To provide the students with the opportunity to make a garment, creating a perfect fit and finish for themselves, using precise measuring techniques, understanding detailed instruction, modifying a pattern to fit with fabric and a pattern of their choice.
Techniques to learn: sleeve fitting, pleating, internal pockets, concealed zips, lapped zips and perfect darts. French seams and hemming techniques, soft tailoring.
Jersey Knit fabric and pattern are new techniques to try!
